What is Preceptorship?

Preceptorship is a process of support and guidance during the early months of your career or at times when your role changes significantly.
Many new graduates feel overwhelmed and anxious during their first few months as an accountable professional, particularly those who move to
new centres when they qualify. Equally, a person changing specialty or clinical rank may value support until confidence is restored and new
experience is reinforced.

As a qualified healthcare professional you have already met the necessary competencies required for practice , so preceptorship is not about teaching you how to do the work. It is not a test or an extension of your pre-registration training and practical experience.
The process of preceptorship is about enhancing and maximising those skills for the benefit of the patient, the department and yourself.

What is a Preceptor?
If you are a new graduate, a preceptor is a colleague who can act as a valuable source of help to you, both professionally and personally
during the early months of your registered practice.

A preceptor is an experienced practitioner (usually in your own field) with good interpersonal skills who can reflect on his or her own
experiences and understands what it is like to be newly qualified.

If you are an experienced practitioner embarking on a new role a preceptor will be an another experienced professional who can act as a
valuable source of help to you, both professionally and personally during the early months in your new role

Does this mean more Paperwork?
Yes a little. It is important that you keep a record of your development
in a reflective diary and that you complete the evaluation grid regularly; but as a clinical professional we hope you will see this as
an opportunity to help shape the future for practitioner support. As you will read later, record keeping during preceptorship is a good habit to acquire and will help you with your portfolio development

How does it work?

This model incorporates three key elements
• Support and guidance from a named preceptor
• Introduction to clinical supervision
• Progressive development goals

The framework can be split into three stages. Time frames for each stage are dependent upon your own individual abilities although indicative
time periods are included for guidance.
Stage 1 Induction (4 weeks)

Stage 2 One to One (4 to 6 weeks)

Stage 3 Clinical Supervision

Evidencing Your Learning Goals

Preceptorship is not a paper gathering exercise but keeping a record of your preceptorship is essential to help you develop ways to evidence your skills throughout your career.

Using a reflective diary will provide a lot of the evidence that you need to meet your goals. Use your diary to record:
• New experiences and how you have dealt with them
• New skills you have learnt from colleagues
• Reflection on your own practice
• How this reflection has / will influence you work
• Support and guidance given by your preceptor and other colleagues
• Details of training
• Problems you have experienced or discussed with colleagues
• How you will avoid / tackle these problems in future
• Timescales and actions plans
• Training records e.g. how to use equipment, health and safety training, calculations, techniques, department protocols
• Appraisal objectives
• Your own learning goals and areas of interest
